GRUESOME PLAYGROUND INJURIES - October 2019 - Kismet Theatre, Nanaimo
It’s not your typical love story: Doug and Kayleen meet at the nurse’s office in their elementary school; she’s got a painful stomach ache, and he’s all banged up from a running dive off the roof of the school. Over the next thirty years, these scar-crossed lovers meet again and again, brought together by injury, heartbreak, and their own self-destructive tendencies.
With great compassion and humor, playwright Rajiv Joseph (Broadway’s Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo) crafts a compelling and unconventional love story about the intimacy between two people when they allow their defenses to drop and their wounds to show.
Dark Matter's Nanaimo debut of Gruesome Playground Injuries was a huge success. Tucked away at Kismet Theatre, audiences were both mesmerized and disturbed by this unique production.

LEFTOVERS - September 2015 - Waterfront Theatre, Vancouver
You can’t choose your family, but you can ignore their phone calls. In this unusual comedy, two siblings connect the dots between past and present when they are forced to spend the weekend together. Laugh-till-you-snort-funny with dialogue that might sound a little too familiar, Leftovers is a brilliant new work worth writing home about.
Leftovers, a play with music, was first produced as part of the Vancouver Fringe Festival in 2015. Showcasing local Vancouver actors, the one act play was a collaborative piece of theatre born from a desire to explore how our memories shape our present through objects and music.
After a successful run, Leftovers was tucked away until 2019, when it was selected to be a part of TheatreOne's Emerging Voices. The new version was created, with the help of dramaturg Nicolle Nattrass and read aloud to a full house of Nanaimo theatre lovers.
